One might think that, with both a band name and record title so whimsical, 's 2002 release, is not to be taken seriously. But after hitting number one in several of Billboard's Latin categories, and with a Latin Grammy nomination that year, critics and audiences alike began to reconsider this misleading impression. However, the fact that the industry now takes the sisters seriously doesn't mean that the sisters themselves do. The emotional tone of the material on is playful, rollicking, and intelligent. The first cut, 'The Ketchup Song,' is a rapid-fire Spanglish reggae club-inflected dance party that equally rewards carefree head-bobbing listeners and those dedicated enough to catch and decipher the song's wry lyricism. Unlike many Latin pop acts, the instrumentals are both harmonically complex and inherently Latino. The prevalent flamenco influence pays homage not only to the sisters' guitarista father, but also to their Andalusian heritage.
Their melodic sense is far too engaging to be dismissed by a 'pop' categorization. Have done a fine job keeping a lighthearted, accessible aesthetic while offering insider humor to those paying close enough attention.
A song named after a condiment sung by a group named after a condiment. Before you start with the 'Only in America' cracks, keep this in mind - these girls are from Spain.
I wasn't aware that ketchup was so beloved across the Atlantic. For all I know, there could be somebody huddled over a desk in deepest Luxembourg writing a love song to Sriracha at this very moment. So who are they and why the fascination with ketchup and what happened to them? Well, to make a long story short, the ketchup part was in honor of their father, a locally popular flamenco guitarist nicknamed 'El Tomate' - as for the rest, read on! ( Spoiler: you will not find out why their father was nicknamed The Tomato). Las Ketchup was originally comprised of three sisters, Lucia, Lola and Pilar Munoz, who, in late 2001, recorded an early version of The Ketchup Song for a local record label based in their hometown of Cordoba, Spain.
The song was brought to the attention of a talent scout from Columbia Records who was so impressed by it that he signed them to a record deal and produced their first album within months of their discovery. The Ketchup Song premiered on radio stations a month prior to the album's debut and immediately became a massive international hit. Three versions of the song were released to maximize its exposure, the second a mix of Spanish and English and the third in Portuguese, in order to capitalize on the South American market.
The song went on to hit number one in more than twenty countries and sold over seven million copies, making it one of the most successful singles in music history. Their debut album, Hijas del Tomate, was released on August 20, 2002 and went four times platinum on the United States Latin charts alone, primarily due to the popularity of The Ketchup Song. The album reached number one in several countries and received a nomination for a Latin Grammy Award for Best Pop Album by a Duo/Group with Vocals in 2003. It ended up selling over twelve million copies.
That's a twelve with six zeroes. Las Ketchup spent the next several years out of the limelight writing songs for their second album. Un Blodymary, the title of both the album and, was released on May 16, 2006 and introduced Rocio, another Munoz sister, to the group, although the original three said she had always been a member, just unable to perform prior to this. Critics gave the album mixed but somewhat positive reviews, specifically noting the group's attempt at growth by combining a broader mix of traditional styles along with their signature techniques from Hijas del Tomate, but the album was a commercial failure. Las Ketchup has not released anything since.
